"Psyche" series
Monika Wanat has been working on the Psyche series since 2014 exploring the complexity of emotions beyond the human experience. She photographs animals with the same approach as humans. However, not to humanize them, but to highlight their individuality. Rather than imposing human traits onto them, she captures their own authentic expressions, allowing their personalities to emerge on their own terms. She balances between emotions and scientific facts.
Through her approach, Wanat challenges anthropocentric perceptions of identity, sentience, and emotional expression. The series engages in a broader dialogue about interspecies relationships and the interconnectedness of all living beings, prompting reflection on the way we define personhood, agency, and the right to emotional complexity.
Rooted in both visual storytelling and conceptual inquiry, Psyche is not only a study of the emotional lives of animals but also an invitation to look beyond species boundaries and recognize the shared essence that connects us all.
Artworks for this series were created in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.
Artworks are printed in limited edition (fewer than 30 pieces in total across all sizes) to ensure exclusivity on the paper of museum quality, meeting the principles of archiving.
